Igniting the Soul at Work - a Mandate for Mystics
I've been reading Robert's books for many years now. His insight and his passion never cease to amaze me. He writes what we all feel, and he writes from such a deep and honest place that it can only help us to clarify the truth in ourselves as well as the world around us. I truly believe this is a book that the corporate world needs to read, needs to set its standards by. Our lives are so precious and Robert helps us to realize how we can live our lives authentically, spiritually, with humor, and how all of this can transpire in the work place. The stories he shares of his own experiences enlighten us all. His words make me WANT to be better, to live my live in truth. Low-Fat Living: Turn Off the Fat-Makers Turn on the Fat-Burners for Longevity Energy Weight Loss Freedom from Disease
Published in Hardcover by Rodale Press (March, 1996)
Authors: Robert K. Cooper and Leslie L. Cooper
Average review score:

SKILLPOWER NOT WILLPOWER!
Low Fat Living is an informative book full of simple techniques you can incorporate into your life to lose weight and become healthier. Instead of fighting your desires for fatty foods or the urge to be a coach potato, Dr.Cooper and his wife Leslie teach you easy techniques to help you work with yourself not against yourself. For example he explains how drinking cold water can help you burn off fat as your body uses calories to warm it to core body temperature. In the book the authors explain how you can turn on your bodies fat burners by making easy to follow lifestyle changes. Little changes that can add up to long term, permanent weight loss. You will learn how artificial sweeteners can increase your cravings for sweets, why breakfast is such an important meal (and what to do if you are not a breakfast eater), snacks that trigger insulin reactions (and thus cause fat storage) snacks that are great anytime, ways to decrease your desire for fats, easy ways to get moving (even if you dislike exercise), mental and physical excercises and much more. The book is loaded with easy to follow suggestions to help you change your health permanently. Many delicious recipes are also included. A wonderful, simple way to help you get on the road to a healthier lifestyle!

A Weight Loss Guide for Life!
I am so grateful for this book. I add every tip, recipe, and exercise to my daily battle against obesity! I especially love the fat burner switch tips. I use every one of them every day. Now, working out is less painful for me because of this extensive and user-friendly guide to lifelong health. Goodbye fat! Welcome, fat free living!

A Whole Systems Approach
My only complaint with this book is its title, "Low Fat Living." It goes far beyond that. This is really the "whole mind, whole body" approach to weight control and more. This book seems to be a collection of everything that the authors could find that contributes to weight loss, organized in an interesting and integrative manner. I particularly loved the study that showed that people watching television burn up fewer calories than people sitting and watching a blank screen. As a woman at age 53, I was wondering if I could ever again shed pounds. My old approaches didn't work. The one thing that I knew was that people who successfuly do lose weight and keep it off do so through making life-style changes and they tailor what they do to their own bodies. This book enabled me to have a comprehensive understanding of what those changes needed to be concerning (1) nutrition, (2) exercise (including simply increasing motion), (3) water, (4) sleep, and (5) stress management. To my surprise, stress management has actually been the most challenging-and perhaps the most rewarding. I am no longer in the "diet" mentallity. I am now concentrating on making the small changes--trying this and that until I find ways that appeal to me and that I can sustain--and these are adding up to large changes that affect not just my weight, but my general health. Through this process and over several months, I am finding that my body and mind are changing in what they want. It is like my whole system is resetting to different standards. I'm beginning to actually be drawn to vegetables and whole grains, walking the dog, and skipping TV. Who'd'a thunk?

Inner Work : Using Dreams and Creative Imagination for Personal Growth and Integration
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (May, 1989)
Author: Robert A. Johnson
Average review score:

Dreams
Everyone, I'm told, has dreams during sleep whether they are remembered or not. Some people dream in color (I do), others in black and white only. Robert Johnson's book on Inner Work is just that, a book that is a guide to finding and communicating with the inner self - the true you. Our lives are so fragmented today, we are all encouraged to "multi-task" - housewives frequently talk on the phone while doing the dishes, busy executives shave while driving; other people type on laptop computers while flying to a destination. I believe that some of our time-saving measures are cheating us out of living in reality - of enjoying this present moment.

Robert Johnson encourages his readers to take the time to establish communication with the inner self, to find out what obstacles exist to accomplishing life-goals; to discover the steps that must be taken; to deal with underlying fears; to strengthen foundations and build new bridges to deeper levels of the unconscious self, and then release the energy that needs expression. It truly is a journey of Inner Work.

I am still in the process of reading and working through this book. I'm sure it'll take a while longer, but it's been worth every bit of the time I've spent on it. I am changed, I am different, the quality of my life is richer, and I am definitely more in touch with who I am, with my current existence and presence.

This book is a must for anyone whose life has whirled into the outer limits. Take the time and do it properly. You have everything to gain.

The Introverted Intuitive's Dream!
It is difficult to imagine how powerful this small book is. Granted, it is probably most appealing to intuitives and introverts, like myself, but for us, it is like manna from heaven. Johnson has such a gift for putting things simply. The book can be read quickly but may well take a lifetime to permeate your consciousness. As a professional astrologer, VisionCoach and expert Tarot symbolist, one of the most frequent questions I am asked by old and new clients is this: "I had this dream, Nancy. What does it mean?" In spite of ongoing research on my part, personally leading dream groups and reading the new books that come out each year, I always return to Johnson's classic. He's said it all. I think "Inner Work" is, quite simply, the best book ever written about dream interpretation. Each of our dreams is as personal as our fingerprints. If you are an extravert, you may not dream often or you may dream the kind of dreams that are just processing the minute business of the day. At least once in awhile, though, even the most extraverted of us has a Major Dream, a dream that wakes us with a cold sweat or a warm pulse. What does this mean? What is communicating here? Why to you? And why NOW? Johnson's book puts all these questions squarely back on your own shoulders for answerung, for ... inner work!! But don't worry, he doesn't just drop you off in the middle of the nowhere without a map. This book contains all the information you need to become an expert at interpreting your own dreams. This is important because, as the great Swiss transcendental psychologist Carl Jung wrote, "God speaks in dream."

Practical, effective introduction (blows away the myths)
Before "Inner Work" I had read a few other dream interpretation books all of which basically described certain recurring dream images and labelled them with a limited definition: basically they were the "Teacher's Edition" to understanding your dreams with the answers in the back. I never understood how an image, say a snake or falling, could be interpreted in basically the same way by so many different people. Johnson explains why you can't. Images are personal and have to be interpreted by the dreamer and Johnson describes how to use "active imagination" to not only figure out what your dreams mean but how they can help along your life journey. This book really helped me tap into the "invisible" part of my consciousness and make practical, healthy changes in my life and prayer. His comparison of archetypes (universally shared images) and personal symbols was most appreciated. Complex ideas are explained in a way that any neophyte to dream analysis can understand and apply to your own life. Johnson explains how to make practical and physical changes by conversing with your dreams.

The Mendelian Threshold
Published in Paperback by Tattersall Publishing (August, 2000)
Author: Robert Humphrey
Average review score:

Find a quiet corner..you won't be able to put this one down!
Make room in your bookshelf and in your reading time for what has to be the best science fiction novel of the year thus far. The Mendelian Threshold opens up the world of genetic engineering and cloning to a scrutiny long overdue. Humphrey has written a concise and gripping tale of a reporter's encounter with a group of amazing people and the amazing science that created them. His treatment of a sensitive subject makes today's news headlines even more astounding as scientists worldwide grapple with the ethics and potential profitability of manufacturing human beings for parts. Humphrey also manages to pull you into a love story that adds dimension and parity to the story right through the last page. This is an extremely well done book that will probably make it topside in short order.

Stop What You're Doing and Buy Yourself a Copy of This Book!
Robert Humphrey has created an immensely likable, down-to-earth main character in Nick Hoskins. An investigative reporter with the Indianapolis Chronicle, he's a man comfortable with his life, not knowing it's about to be propelled far beyond anything he could have possibly imagined.

Nick is in the right place at the right time, and letting his reporter instincts kick in, manages to discover a family of wealthy, beautiful, and secretive clones. Yes, clones! They're chagrined that Nick has slipped past their security to eavesdrop on a vital "family" meeting, but Michael Smyth, the head of the family, realizes a possible advantage to using Nick's tenacity to their benefit.

This is where Robert Humphrey grabs you by the throat and takes you on a thrill ride that barely slows down for the curves! It has everything from topical scientific issues to international intrigue. This excellent novel offers rich characters readers will care about while forcing us to wonder, "What would I do?"

I very much enjoyed this skillfully crafted story. The Mendelian Threshold is a compelling story that pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn't let you go until you finish reading it. I wanted to ignore anything that would take me away from finding out what happened next!

Incredible tale of the soon-to-be-fact-not-fiction!!!!
My God!! What a story Robert Humphrey has put together. Nick Hoskins reminded me of Gavin McLeod as a somewhat bumbling reporter but it would take a Tom Cruise to pull off the romantic protagonist who makes this story a masterpiece. It's been a long time since I found a book I enjoyed enough to read twice in the same week. I will treasure this story for many reasons but mostly because it brings to life a subject that heretofore has been the subject of science fiction. The clones in the story are much like what I imagined, i.e. real people with real feelings and emotions and desires. Mr. Humphrey manages to draw the reader into the minds of these "creations" to experience normal human emotions on a grand scale. I sure hope to see more from this author very soon.

Pathfinder: First In, Last Out
Published in Audio Cassette by Random House (Audio) (26 February, 2002)
Authors: Richard R. Burns and Robert O'Keefe
Average review score:

Burns paints a clear picture
I was not in Vietnam, I wasn't even in the service, but the recent movie WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE resparked my interest again in a war so few of us really understood. I didn't burn my draft card, protest, or march. I have read 20 books in the past 3 months about Vietnam, 1 was 9 lbs., 3 were the country as in the present. Richie put me right next to him on every page and in every situation. Where is that dog? The good and bad side of not taking gun to a chopper crash site. The Recondo school, I felt the cool breeze coming out of that rock cave as Burns looked inside. This book is writen as a young man would write, not like a middle aged mature man who had lived a good life after returning to the world. I am not sure how Burns does that, but it makes for great reading. I am truly sorry to hear that cancer has cut Richard R. Burns life short. I will make a monetary donation in his memory. Cancer has claimed many of my family members. The History Channel ran a special on Recon Teams and there sat Richie Burns talking about his weeks at Recondo.

Very well written
This book never drags, and kept my interest throughout. Different from a Special Forces story, Burns seemed to be on the receiving end of enemy fire most of the time while he guided helicopters for landings. He knew some of the other well known authors on LRRP's and special forces in Vietnam. He was lucky to not be hurt while being blown over by mortars or lightning, and also have a dud mortar round land a foot away. Very upbeat and refreshing.

A GREAT MAN & AN OUTSTANDING BOOK!
The way the author writes the story is the way he lived... Richie Burns, in his book, we were all young soldiers doing our jobs and he meant all of us that served with honor and dignity in that Vietnam War. PATHFINDERS is about setting the example. Leading soldiers in combat by courage not by rank and a deep faith in the man next to you on the "team." This book is remarkable and Richie downplays what he truly did do for all of his years on this earth. God Bless you, Richie. I know this book will do well. You wrote it with passion, honesty and integrity just as you lived your life.

People Are Never the Problem: A New Paradigm for Relating to Others
Published in Hardcover by Honor Books (June, 1999)
Authors: Robert Jr Watts and Ken Blanchard
Average review score:

Very insightful book from a wonderful person.
This book was sent to me by my friend and the author, Robert Watts, Jr. The book is a very insightful look at the way we all conduct our relationsips with other people, and of the way we see and perceive people. Once you read this book, you will see people in a totally new and different light. The author relates many of his own personal life experiences which lends a "realness" to the material. This should be a must read for anyone dealing with people on a day to day basis, which would include nearly all of us. Thank you for sharing this part of yourself with the world.

One of the Best Books I've Read This Year
Thank you Robert for this book. I hope it gets the attention and success that it deserves. As someone whose daily life revolves around the issues of managing people and working with partners in business and in social entrepreneurship, the level of pain I have seen because people do not own what this book offers--fresh evidence that problems and people are two different things--is monumental in both its breadth and depth. This book can bring grace and caring back into business and personal relationships to those who have the courage to check their judgemental-baggage-problem at the door!

Wonderful New Voice Says Exactly What We Need To Hear
Wow. Have you ever been going through something and all of a sudden you pick up a book or an article or a song and right there in front of you are the exact words you needed to hear to deal with the issue? Well, due to his insightful plunge into human nature and the human condition Robert Watts turned on that kind of light bulb inside my head several times throughout this book. After reading it I felt eager to let go of the bitterness and anger that build up inside when people don't act the way we want them to. His stories poignantly illustrate how viewing people as problems keeps us from getting the most out of our relationships -- family , friends, bosses and subordinates. There is a strange combination of strength and vulnerability in this one -- he opens himself up for full disclosure in order to make his point then carries us right along with him to work through his pain. And by doing so we get a better sense as to how to work through our own. Robert Watts reminded me that we human beings need to build each other up, not tear each other down and in so doing, we all win.

Reading Lyrics
Published in Hardcover by Schocken Books (03 October, 2000)
Authors: Robert Kimball and Robert Gottlieb
Average review score:

Excellent, but stupid problem
The one issue I have with this otherwise wonderful book is the way the editor writes about popular hits in each author's intro but then doesn't always include the lyrics to those songs! The hell is up with that?? If you're going to mention a song that everyone knows but then skip the lyrics of that song, it makes for a very frustrating time. Is there a vol 2 on the way?

You Can't Go Wrong Buying And Enjoying This Book
I admit it... I'm a sucker for a good lyric. And this book is a treasure trove. If you don't like songs and their lyrics, this book is not for you. But if you DO - WOW! - this book is heavenly. You know that old saw about... if you could only take a couple of books to own and read for the rest of your life, etc. Well, without a doubt, THIS book would be one of my choices. It will make you laugh and cry and remember falling in love. What more can you ask of ANYTHING?

Great Compendium of Popular Song Lyrics
This book pulls together something more than 1,000 sets of lyrics of the best known American popular songs from 1900 to 1975. It is a wide and well chosen selection that gives lots of coverage to well-known lyricists like Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart,Oscar Hammerstein, and Stephen Sondheim. It also provides lyrics for a lot of other well-known songs by less well-known lyricists. If you like American popular music, you will probably finding yourself lost in this book, looking and finding your particular favorite songs and going off to listening to some great recordings of the songs from which the lyrics are taken. The book is laid our well with clear print and with a good index.

North Star Over My Shoulder: A Flying Life
Published in Digital by Simon & Schuster ()
Authors: Bob Buck and Robert N. Buck
Average review score:

Flying life
A wonderfully written book of an amazing life. From DC-2 to 747, it was a career spaning the greatest changes in civil aviation. A story that is now told by someone who was active in advancing the skill of airline flying and can make it very readable. The airline pilot autobiography is not a new idea - there have been some good ones and boat-loads of just OK ones - but this is the best I've read.

A pilot's pilot (Captain Buck flew the line, did research and wrote some best-selling classic pilot education books) who can make the flight through the decades come alive. Imagine sitting down with an old man at a small airport who still pilots gliders and he turns out to be a storyteller of great wit and charm, a man who still remembers when crossing the Atlantic was a battle, who was there when airline flying advanced from shaky pistons to huge jets. Who would not want to relax in the sun, watch the airplanes, and listen to the wonders of TWA unfold. In the tradition of St. Exupery, Ernest Gann and Len Morgan. And yes, I liked it.

Best book in a while
North Star Over my Shoulder is the best flying book I've ever read, and one of the most fun books that I've read in a long time. Captain Buck has an easy to read style and has had a fascinating life centered around aviation. From the earliest planes through 747s, Buck has flown them all. He bring us along through his life with entertainment and a sense of humor. Highly recommended!

how for home made glider to f104?
Simply amazing , one of the best aviation "history" books I have ever read, Truly those were unique times for aviation : the author started flying wood and fabric airplanes and finished his carreer flying 747. I reccomend this book to pilots and to everybody intersted in the history of commercial aviation and its developments. In my opinion it is comparable if not better than another classic : Fate is the hunter.

The Ocean Almanac
Published in Paperback by Doubleday (17 February, 1984)
Author: Robert Hendrickson
Average review score:

If you like "Sea Stories", this is the book for you!
I have had over three copies of this book and read and re-read the stories contained within. It isn't a book that you have to read from front to back, just pick a subject or topic and have at it! Whether its Sea-monsters, Ship wrecks, or Sea life; Ghost stories or True stories, this wonderful book is a wealth of information & lore. A must have for Navy men (and women), sailors or any lover of the sea and the stories and mysteries she holds!

For all Lovers of the Oceans
This is probably the most read book in my personnal library. If you love the ocean you will find this book very informative, containing information on just about everything from weather, to pirates, to who was the first to discover the "new world" (yes this is a disputed topic, think about it why do we live in "America" not "Columbia" and what about those wily Vikings what role did they play?). I often refer to it when I hear something referenced on "Discovery Channel" or "History Channel". Although some sections are little out dated today, it was only published 18 years ago! Most of the information is still relevant today. Not only is it full of information it is well written and easy to read. Picking this book up is not like grabbing an encyclopedia and finding a new subject, it was actually written to be read for pleasure not just information. Like i have already said if you love the ocean you should purchase this book imediately. (my apologies for any spelling errors above, but orthography is not my strong suit)

If it's on, in, over or under the oceans it's in this book.
This book is a wonderful gift for someone who is in love with the oceans of the world, the history of man's adventures on them and all the creatures dwelling within them. The Ocean Almanac is the Guinness Book of the oceans. A great book for "installment reading".

Powerful Prayers
Published in Paperback by Renaissance Books (November, 1999)
Authors: Larry King, Rabbi Irwin Katsof, Irwin Katsof, and Robert H. Schuller
Average review score:

Powerful Prayer a Must Read
Powerful Prayers is a Must Read Reading Powerful Prayers provides you amazingly simple examples of commuincating with God through personal everyday prayer. It opens the door to an otherwise complex arena of thought. The discussion between Larry King and Rabbi Katsof is sensitive and thought provoking. The interviews add incredible depth to the discussion. They also legitimize informal prayer, and the many different ways people have found to communicate with their respective spiritual beings. I recommend this book to everyone who is open to exlporing their individual communication with God. It is a must read. It has changed my entire understanding or paradigm in regards to my relationship with God outside of a house of worship.

Simply Powerful
Mr. King delved into the foundation of Spirituality and Religion and made simple an otherwise complex and controversial issue. The book focuses on the individual and his or her communication with God, while setting aside religious beliefs. I would like to recommend to friends who are too formal about prayers and to those who maybe agnostic such as Larry King in his book.

A must-read for inspiration
Unlike most "religious" category books, this book lacks the preachy quality that causes most readers to not absorb the text. This book insightfully breaks down barriers between different religious beliefs and simply brings forth the universal belief in a higher power. The people that Larry King and Rabbi Katsof chose to interview are made more personable and are made more tangible through their everyday prayers, which are similar to ours, and their quest to be closer to God. This book would make a fabulous holiday gift that is sure to please a recipient of any religious background.
